The American Regions Mathematics League (ARML), with the help of a grant from the National Security Agency’s Mathematics Education Partnership Program, is introducing a new competition on Saturday, April 5th called ARML Local.

ARML Local is open to all high schools and home schooling groups in the United States and Canada. Each school may field up to four teams with six students per team. We encourage schools near each other to meet up and compete, but the contest can also be done at individual schools. The competition must be completed on April 5th (or April 6th under special circumstances) in order for test scores to be considered valid, and all test scores must be submitted via e-mail or at the ARML Local website by 11:59pm PDT on Tuesday, April 8th to be eligible for any prizes or recognition.

ARML Local, which can be completed in about 3.5 hours (allowing for breaks), has a round structure similar to the main ARML competition, so it is excellent preparation for the main competition at the end of May. The rounds are:

Coaches and/or local contest coordinators will be responsible for grading the papers the day of the contest and submitting team scores via e-mail or at the ARML website. Scores will be compiled from nationwide, and the top teams will receive prizes. We will have two divisions: the Archimedes Division for schools with average enrollments per grade level of 250 students or more per grade, as well as for any school with a selective admissions process (or teams that are created from one or more schools), and the Bernoulli Division for everyone else (teams from smaller schools may opt to compete in the Archimedes Division). The students on the first and second place team in each division will receive $50 and $25 Amazon.com gift certificates (ties will be broken first by total individual round score, then by team round + theme round score, then by random drawing). In addition, all students with the top individual score will be entered into a random drawing for a $100 Amazon.com gift certificate.
