ARML President's Letter to All Coaches - ARML 2010

Dear ARML Coach,

We welcome you with great pleasure to the 35th Annual American Region Mathematics League competition. This much anticipated event will take place concurrently on June 4th and 5th, 2010 at Penn State University, the University of Iowa, the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, and the University of Georgia.

Online registration will open on April 6, 2010. You will be asked to create a new login and password for this year. When registering, you will be asked to provide the names of your teams, contact information for the coaches, time and day of arrival and departure, as well as the names of your students. You may edit your information up to the registration deadline of May 14, 2010. Registration will close promptly at 11:59:59 on May 14, 2010. Please make sure that the names that you submit are accurate. If changes must be made after the deadline has passed, your team may be assesed a "no-show" fee by the university. This charge could be as high as $25 per "no-show." In addition, the Head Coach of each team will be required to have the parent/guardian of each student who competets to complete a waiver. Any team that does not register and provide us with room-mates by May 14th will be penalized $50.

The ARML competition continues to grow. In 2009, there were 133 teams who competed in the USA and 17 teams who competed in the IRML Correspondence Division. In spite of the poor economy there is only one team who will not return, however, we are planning for several additional teams this year, as well as a new team from Kansas. This serves to illustrate the importance and value placed on the ARML Competition. It is also a further reminder that ARML is viewed as a positive and rewarding experience for the students, coaches, and parents. China will bring a Northern and Southern team, and Vietnam, Macau, and the Northern Mariana Islands will compete at UNLV. Due to financial problems, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Columbia will compete in the IRML Correspondence Division. Some of the other IRML teams that will be competing via correspondence are Turkey, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Singapore, South Africa, Beijing, Bulgaria, and Vietnam.

There will not be an increase in fees for 2010. In 2011, the "per person fee" for all attendees will be $65. This represents an increase of $10 from 2010.

Nine teams in Division A and seven teams in Division B will receive awards. The seven winning Division B teams will move to Division A for the next three years. If there are no winning teams in Division A or B at a site then the high scoring team in that division will be a site winner.

If you want the AMC and AIME scores from your state or region, please send an email to Steve Dunbar at sdunbar@unl.edu. You will receive the student names, home addresses and their score. Please inform your team that we will be selling materials such as ARML books, T-shirts, and ARML mugs at all four sites.

The Proctor Manuals for all four sites will be posted on the competition link by April 10th. Please print copies for your proctors and ask them to review the manual prior to the on-site proctors meeting.

I want to thank all of the ARML Officers, and the four site coordinators in advance for all their time and effort in making the 2010 ARML Competition a successful event for all of our students. I want to wish all teams good luck, and thank all the coaches for their dedication to their students and to ARML.

Sincerely,

J. Bryan Sullivan
ARML President
