International Regions Mathematics League (IRML)

For Immediate Release – January 11, 2009

International Regional Math League (IRML)

There will be two separate divisions for IRML; one will be for international teams that compete in the United States, and the other for those teams that compete via the internet.

Date: May 30, 2009.

If this is inconvenient for your team, please ask for an alternate date.

Teams that compete in the US:

These teams are not eligible for American awards but will receive certificates and patches. Top scoring students can receive medals, and the top two teams and their students will receive plaques.

Teams that compete via the internet:

Although it is more exciting if teams attend ARML in the United States, it is not always possible. Foreign teams can participate in the IRML contest via e-mail. In 2008 teams from Bulgaria, Turkey, and Vietnam participated in IRML. The problems and answers are e-mailed to the supervising teacher and his or her colleagues, and are available in English as well as in the native language of the participating country. The supervisors administer the contest, correct the Team, Individual, and Relay Rounds, and e-mail the results back to ARML where they are combined with the results from other IRML sites. The Power Question solutions will be faxed to one of the contest sites in the United States and graded there. We give certificates of participation as well as awards specific to the IRML competition. There is no cost for the first two years, but after that we must charge a fee for participation. Such fees cover the translation as well as the preparing and shipping of awards. While an individual high school can participate, we encourage teachers to form teams consisting of the best students in the participating city, province, or country. Information about the ARML contest can be found at www.arml.com. Please contact Don Barry at dbarry@andover.edu for further information and please cc jbsully@verizon.net.
