International Regions Mathematics League (IRML)
Question:
Why should I participate in on-site IRML when I can take the same test in off-site IRML?
Answer:
The experience of ARML is one that students remember for a lifetime. Being in an auditorium and sharing the experience, being at college campus for the first time for many participants, and the interaction between kids from many areas of the country and world is hard to beat. While the competition over the Internet is the same, it is only a test not a growth situation. If we could set up a site in another country that would duplicate the ARML experience we would make every effort to do so. Teams that have come to ARML in the U.S. have all gone home richer for the experience.
As to the legitimacy of the scores for off-site Internet teams, since we do not have full control of the scoring, it is hard to count them the same as those scored at one of our four sites. We keep those teams in their own division. Students and teachers receive certificates of participation, but it would not be fair for the off-site teams to compete against the on-site teams.
