ARML 2010 - Press Release


On June 4th and 5th the 35th ARML competition was held concurrently at Penn State University, University of Georgia, University of Iowa and University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Approximately 2000 students competed in this national event.

In the A division, the competition’s early leaders with 45 points each in the Team Round were the Lehigh Valley A1 team, the Eastern Massachusetts' A1 team and Connecticut’s A1 team. All of these teams participated at PSU. Other leaders also with 45 Team Points were Southern California A1 team competing at UNLV; the North Carolina A1 team at GA and Texas A1 team competing at Iowa. Not far behind with 40 Team Round points were: San Francisco Bay A1, San Diego A1 and A2, Michigan A1, Indiana A1, New York City A2, Colorado A1, and Missouri A1.

The individual round saw a strong performance by the North Carolina A1 team with 84 points and put them into the lead with a total of 129 points. Lehigh Valley A1 was second with 123 points after scoring 78 in the individual round. San Francisco Bay A1 with 82 points placed them in 3rd place with 122 points and tied for 4th with 121 points were Southern California A1 and with the highest individual score of 86 points was NYC A1.

A relay round score of 38 points which was the second best score in this round pushed the Lehigh Valley A1 team into the lead with 161 points. Southern California A1’s score of 32 and North Carolina A1’s 24 points had them tied for second place with 153 points each. San Francisco Bay A1 score of 29 and San Diego A1’s had the highest relay round score of 43 and tied them for 4th place with 151 points. Still in the hunt were Texas A1 with 149 points, and E Mass A1 and NYC A1 with 139 points.

In the power question round, the Lehigh Valley A1 team solidified their hold of first place by scoring 43 points to end up as the high scoring team with 204 points. Southern California A1 maintained their 2nd place finish with 39 power question points for a total of 192 points and San Francisco Bay A1 finished third with 190 points by also scoring 39 in the power question round. North Carolina A1 narrowly edged out San Diego A1 188 to 197. Texas A1 followed in 6th place with 183 points while NYC A1 finished with 177 points which was just slightly higher than the Eastern Massachusetts A1 team’s score of 175. Rounding out the top ten scoring teams were the AAST A1 team with 170 which was just one point better than Michigan’s A1 team.

In the B division, both Nassau County B1 and Montgomery B1 started with 30 points each in the team round. Nassau County B1 remained in the lead with 78 points by scoring 48 in the individual round. Remaining in second place with 73 points was Montgomery B1. Minnesota B1 jumped to 3rd place with 68 points by scoring 48 points in the individual round. At this stage of the competition, Georgetown B1 was in 4th place with 65 points and Kentucky B1 had a one point lead over Thomas Jefferson B1, 62 points to 61 points.

Nassau County B1 continued to be the B division leader with 96 points by scoring 18 points in the relay round. Minnesota B1 jumped to 2nd place with 90 points by scoring 22 points in that round. Montgomery B1 was only one point ahead of Kentucky B1, 84 to 83. Thomas Jefferson B1 was in 5th place with 77 points and Georgetown B1 was 6th with 68 points.

Nassau County B1 maintained their B division lead by scoring 28 points in the power round to finish with 124 points to lead that division. By scoring 28 in the power round Montgomery B1 finished with 112 points to tie Minnesota B1 for 2nd place. Kentucky B1 finished in 4th place with 110 points while Georgetown B1 score of 36 points in the power round enabled them to finish in 5th with 104 points. Washington B1 finished in 6th place with 99 points and Southern California B1 finished in 7th place with 96 points.

In the IRML On-Site Division, both China and Macau earned 135 points but China was the winner due to the tie-breaking rule which takes into consideration the sum of the team and power question points.
